COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology at the University of Galway is a four-year program that equips students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional experience needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving field of computing. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in programming, web development, computing systems, algorithms, electrical and electronic engineering, physics, and mathematics, establishing the core principles required for further study. In the second year, the curriculum advances to software engineering, object-oriented programming, database systems, computer systems and organization, networks and data communications, and discrete mathematics, with optional modules in electronic instrumentation, digital security, formal logic, and applied statistics to develop analytical and technical expertise. Year three emphasizes professional and practical experience, with modules in software engineering, programming, networks, databases, human-computer interaction, and games programming, alongside a professional experience module and learning in professional development. The fourth and final year allows students to specialise and engage in advanced topics such as machine learning, software engineering III, information retrieval, image processing and computer vision, distributed systems, computer and network security, artificial intelligence, and emerging mathematics modules such as algebraic foundations of quantum computing and measure theory. Students complete a final year project, integrating their learning through research, design, or development work, preparing them for complex problem-solving in real-world contexts. Throughout the program, students develop not only technical skills but also critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and ethical awareness, which are essential for the demands of the technology industry. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in software development, cybersecurity, data analysis, artificial intelligence, network administration, and related computing fields, or for further postgraduate study. The program combines a rigorous academic curriculum with practical and professional experience, ensuring students are ready to innovate, adapt, and contribute to the digital and technological challenges of the future.
