COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology degree at the University of Galway is a four-year program designed to provide students with a solid scientific foundation while developing the practical and professional skills needed to apply biology in real-world contexts. In the first year, students build core knowledge in biology, chemistry, and data science, complemented by introductory biotechnology and language modules, with hands-on laboratory work forming a key part of the learning experience. In the second year, the curriculum advances to molecular cell biology, microbiology, and chemistry, alongside continued development of biotechnology and language skills, allowing students to deepen their understanding of living systems and their applications. The third year focuses on professional experience, combining molecular cell biology, microbiology, and pharmacology with language studies, while offering students the opportunity for a 3-7 month placement with Irish industry partners or in European research laboratories. Alternatively, students can follow an on-campus pathway emphasizing genetics and molecular biology, gaining additional hands-on experience and research skills. The final year integrates specialization and professional development, combining advanced molecular cell biology and microbiology with an introduction to business, including a practical business development project. Students complete a mentored literature review and choose between conducting an original research project or undertaking advanced practical skills and employability training. This structure ensures graduates possess both deep scientific knowledge and the professional skills highly valued in biotechnology sectors. Core modules across the four years include biotechnology concepts and laboratory work, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, recombinant protein production, plant and agri-biotechnologies, and modern biotechnologies, alongside employability and language modules to support global career readiness. With small class sizes, interactive teaching, and opportunities for industry placements or international research experience, graduates emerge well-prepared for careers in biopharmaceuticals, agricultural biotechnology, environmental applications, and scientific research, or for further postgraduate study, combining expertise in science with practical, professional, and entrepreneurial skills to make meaningful contributions to society.
