COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Galway is a four-year honours program that blends a strong foundation in science with specialised study in human biology. In the first year, students are introduced to core subjects including biology, chemistry, and physics, alongside fundamentals of human biology and an introduction to current biomedical research. This year focuses on building essential academic skills such as communication, data analysis, and scientific reasoning, providing a strong base for future specialisation.In the second year, students begin to tailor their studies by selecting two main pathways from anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, or physiology, along with one elective subject. During this year, students develop further academic skills by engaging with scientific literature and presenting reports and talks on current biomedical topics. Year 2 also encourages exploration of career options in biomedical science, allowing students to consider future professional pathways.The third year provides an opportunity for deeper specialisation in one chosen pathway while continuing with core modules in biostatistics and research methods. Students gain insight into the full research lifecycle, including hypothesis generation, grant writing, funding, and publication of outputs. Hands-on experience is offered through a mini research project, enabling students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical experiments and develop problem-solving and analytical skills.In the final year, students continue with their chosen specialisation in anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, or physiology, studying contemporary topics in depth. The culmination of the program is the major independent research project, in which students work closely with an academic advisor to address a specific research question. This project allows students to integrate the theory and skills they have acquired, with outcomes presented as both a written report and an oral presentation. Throughout the degree, students build research competence, critical thinking, and transferable skills, preparing them for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, biotechnology, or further postgraduate study.
