COURSE CURRICULUM

The Law (BCL), Criminology and Criminal Justice program is a four-year degree that combines a full legal education with specialised study of crime, punishment, and justice systems, enabling students to graduate with a Bachelor of Civil Law while developing expertise in criminology and criminal justice. In the first year, students build strong foundations through core legal subjects such as Contract Law, Constitutional Law, Tort Law, and Understanding the Law, alongside introductory modules in Criminology and Criminal Justice, with optional choices including Critical Thinking for Lawyers, Family and Child Law, or Legal Languages. The second year deepens legal and criminological knowledge through Criminal Law, European Union Law, Evidence, Mooting, Advanced Criminology, Advanced Criminal Justice, and Forensic, Abnormal and Clinical Psychology, strengthening advocacy, analytical reasoning, and communication skills, while optional modules such as Labour Law, Disability Rights, and IT Law broaden expertise. The third year offers opportunities for study abroad or professional placement, allowing students to gain international exposure or practical workplace experience, including immersive options for those studying Legal Irish. In the final year, students complete advanced subjects including Land Law, Equity Law, Company Law, Policing, Victimology, and a guided research essay, alongside a wide range of optional modules such as Administrative Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, International Trade Law, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Overall, the program integrates rigorous legal training with critical examination of crime and justice, preparing graduates for careers in law, public policy, criminal justice agencies, advocacy, and further postgraduate study.
