COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in General Nursing at the University of Galway is a four-year, professionally accredited program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies required to practice as a Registered General Nurse. Structured around a progressive curriculum that balances theory, practical learning, and clinical experience, the course ensures students develop safe, person-centred, and evidence-informed nursing care across diverse healthcare settings. Students gain foundational knowledge in health sciences, nursing theory, communication, and research in the first year, alongside supervised clinical practice to begin applying skills in real-world contexts. This early integration of theory and practice supports the development of professional behaviours, clinical judgment, and reflective practice from the outset.In the second year, the curriculum builds on this foundation, expanding into community care, specialist client groups, applied psychology, health promotion, and life-limiting conditions, while continuing clinical practice and practice assessments. Students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for safe, ethical, and effective patient care, integrating academic learning with hands-on experience in hospitals and community settings. Year three focuses on complex patient care, clinical judgement, health promotion, medicines management, and law and ethics, alongside elective modules allowing exploration of areas of personal or professional interest. Practical skills and decision-making capabilities are further enhanced through extensive clinical placements and formative assessments.The final year consolidates learning through advanced practice, leadership, and professional development modules, complemented by a major internship placement that transitions students from the student role to professional practice. Key modules in year four include clinical practice, leading and developing practice, literature review, internship, and transition to practice. Throughout all four years, students complete e-portfolios, reflective exercises, and practice assessments to demonstrate their competence, professional growth, and readiness to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). By combining rigorous academic study, supervised clinical practice, and professional development, the BSc (Hons) in General Nursing prepares graduates to deliver high-quality, compassionate, and safe care in today’s evolving healthcare environment.
