COURSE CURRICULUM
The undergraduate medicine program is designed to provide a transformative education in an inclusive environment, equipping graduates with excellence in critical thinking, safe collaborative practice, and communication skills, all within a framework of patient-centred, ethical, equitable, and sustainable care. The curriculum is built around five key themes: Clinical Science and Discovery, Population and Global Health, Skilled Safe Patient-Centred Care, The Patient in the Healthcare System and Professional Practice, and Self-Care and Personal Development. Learning is delivered across three integrated modules throughout the five-year program. Module 1, Knowledge of Health, Sickness, and Practice, introduces students to biomedical science, clinical principles, epidemiology, public health, patient safety, professional identity, and personal development through integrated learning blocks, case-based learning, tutorials, labs, workshops, and lectures, alongside work on their e-portfolio. Module 2, Clinical Skills for Safe Practice, focuses on developing the practical skills needed to deliver ethical, compassionate, and collaborative patient care in hospital and community settings, emphasizing teamwork and patient partnership. Module 3, Professional Competencies, fosters the development of professional identity, reflective practice, and clinical engagement through placements, e-portfolios, and formative assessments integrated with the first two modules. The program begins with a Foundation Year, covering fundamentals in chemistry, physics, human biology, molecular and cellular biology, and an introduction to medicine, providing a strong scientific base and early exposure to professional behaviours. Year 1 builds biomedical knowledge and skills for practice, with learning blocks focused on haematology, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems, examining both normal and abnormal functions. Year 2 continues this approach, covering musculoskeletal, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine systems, and development and aging. In Year 3, students transition to early clinical practice with placements and learning in medicine, acute emergency care, surgery, ambulatory medicine, and electives. Year 4 emphasizes specialized practice, including paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, and general practice, integrating placements with teaching. The final Year 5 prepares students for independent practice, combining advanced clinical learning in acute medicine, surgery, and critical care with a junior internship to ensure graduates are fully prepared for professional medical practice.
