COURSE CURRICULUM

In the BA Government (Politics, Economics and Law) at University of Galway, students begin in first year by taking an equal distribution of modules across the three core disciplines, completing 20 ECTS in Politics, 20 ECTS in Economics, and 20 ECTS in Law. First-year Politics modules include Introduction to Politics, Practicing Politics, Introduction to Government, and Practicing Government, while Economics covers Principles of Micro and Macro Economics and Skills for Economics, and Law includes Tort Law, Irish Legal Systems, and Legal Skills. From second year onwards, students choose one discipline as their major and continue the other two as minors, taking 30 ECTS in their major and 15 ECTS in each minor in years two and four. Second-year modules span areas such as International and Global Politics, European Politics, Modern Political Thought, Intermediate Micro and Macro Economics, Mathematics and Statistics for Economics, Financial Economics, Legal Methods and Research, Contract Law, Constitutional Law, Housing Law and Policy, Environmental Law, Irish Economic History, and Introduction to Policy Making. Third year typically consists of Study Abroad, Work Placement, and complementary options, alongside modules such as Professional Skills for Government and Policy, Policymaking, Lobbying and Advocacy, Government Field Trip, Introduction to Sustainability, Green Political Thought, and Governing the Poor. In final year, advanced options include Political Liberty, Contemporary American Politics, Contemporary African Politics, Government and Public Policy, Public Economics, Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, Health Economics, Administrative Law, European Union Law, and Criminal Law, allowing students to specialise further and prepare for careers in policy, governance, economics, or legal fields.
