COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Mathematics and Education) at University of Galway follows a carefully structured four-year curriculum (60 ECTS per year) that integrates advanced mathematical study with professional teacher education. Curriculum information relates to the current academic year and modules may be subject to change. Students must complete required modules and, where applicable, select optional modules to reach the total credit requirement each year. In Year 1, students build strong foundations in mathematics and education through modules such as Analysis and Algebra 1 and 2, Introduction to Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling, Skills of Applied Mathematics, Principles of Second-Level Mathematics, Philosophy and History of Irish Education, Preparing to Teach, and Introduction to Educational Sciences. Year 2 deepens both subject knowledge and pedagogical practice with modules including Curriculum and Assessment, Methodologies, Statistics for Data Science, Differential Forms, Mechanics I, Geometry, Linear Algebra, and a substantial Practical Teaching program. In Year 3, students advance into areas such as Groups, Discrete Mathematics, Complex Analysis, Modelling, Software for Mathematical Scientists and Educators, and Psychology, Sociology and Catering for Diversity, alongside Practical Teaching program 3 and the first stage of a Research Dissertation. Year 4 focuses on professional consolidation and specialisation, including Block Teaching Practice, Research Dissertation Part 2, Non-Linear Systems, and a range of optional advanced modules such as Topology, Functional Analysis, Cryptography, Applied Statistics, Advanced Group Theory, Fields and Applications, and Mathematics for Sustainability. This comprehensive structure ensures graduates achieve both deep mathematical expertise and the professional competencies required for second-level teaching.
