COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History at University of Galway is an innovative four-year degree offering significant choice and flexibility in both subject combinations and modes of study. In Year One, students study History alongside two other Arts subjects of their choice, enjoying broad freedom in selecting complementary disciplines. Those wishing to progress with two minor subjects to degree level must choose from Journalism and Global Media, Political and Sociological Studies, Economics and Public Policy, Philosophy, French, Italian, or German. Whether selecting minors or keeping options open, students are encouraged to follow their interests, supported by dedicated academic guidance. In Year Two, students tailor their studies by choosing one of three Learning Pathways. The BA Historical Studies pathway allows students to continue History as a major alongside the same two minors selected in first year. The BA History, Politics and Philosophy pathway combines History as a major with Sociology and Politics and Sociological Studies as minors. The BA History (joint-honours) pathway enables students to pursue History as a major alongside one other subject taken in first year as a double major, such as History and English. Year Three provides opportunities to broaden experience through study abroad at partner universities across Europe and North America, undertake a history-related work placement in settings such as museums or archives, or complete an Independent Research Project on a chosen topic. In Year Four, students continue their selected pathway, refine their expertise, and prepare for professional careers or postgraduate study through advanced modules and focused academic development.
