COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Film and Digital Media degree at University of Galway is a four-year program designed to combine critical understanding of cinema with practical expertise in digital media production. Throughout the course, students take Film and Digital Media as a core subject while also studying one additional Arts subject, creating a balanced and interdisciplinary education. In first year, students are introduced to key concepts through modules such as digital design, film form, visual culture, and introductory filmmaking, while beginning their chosen second subject. In second year, the focus shifts toward skill development and creative practice with modules in screenwriting, digital storytelling, creative media design, film theory, and practical film production, alongside continued study in the additional subject. Third year deepens professional engagement through advanced production work and offers opportunities for study abroad or industry work placement, allowing students to gain valuable real-world or international experience. In final year, students undertake advanced and specialist modules that may include documentary production, immersive and mixed reality media, television drama, gender and sexuality onscreen, and creative programming, while completing higher-level work in their second subject. Across the four years, the program develops strong analytical abilities, technical competence, storytelling skills, and an understanding of the cultural and industrial contexts of film and digital media. Graduates are well prepared for careers in film and television production, digital content creation, media and communications, and the wider creative industries, as well as for postgraduate study in film, media, or related disciplines.
