COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in English and Creative Writing at University of Galway is structured around a flexible credit-based system, where students complete 60 ECTS credits per year through a combination of required core subjects and optional subjects. Curriculum details relate to the current academic year and may be subject to change. In Year 1, students take Creative Writing and English as required core subjects (20 credits each), alongside one optional subject worth 20 credits chosen from a wide range including Ancient Classics, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation, French, Gaeilge, Geography, German, Global Media, History, Italian, Léann na Cumarsáide, Mathematics, Modern Irish Culture Studies, Performance and Screen Studies, Philosophy, or Spanish. Each subject consists of modules, which are examinable units with specific codes and credit values, divided across two semesters. In Year 2, students complete 30 credits in English and Creative Writing, combining required Creative Writing modules such as The Voices and Styles of Poetry and Dramatic Ideas with a broad selection of optional English modules spanning literary periods, genres, and themes. They also continue with their chosen optional subject at an advanced level (30 credits), provided they studied it in Year 1. Year 3 focuses intensively on Creative Writing, offering options such as Independent Writing Projects, International Creative Writing, or a year-long personal project. In Year 4, students take advanced English and Creative Writing modules, including a Professionalisation Portfolio, alongside higher-level options in their continued subject area. The program balances structured progression with significant choice, enabling students to tailor their academic and creative development.
