COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies at University of Galway follows a structured four-year format within the Bachelor of Arts (Joint-Honours) framework, combining specialised theatre training with broader Arts study. In Year 1, students study Drama and Theatre alongside two additional Arts subjects selected from approved subject groups (excluding Group 5 and not choosing two from the same group). First-year Drama modules introduce core foundations in performance and theatre-making, including Introduction to Acting, Theatre Technology and Digital Media, Performance Analysis, and Theatre Histories, building both practical and analytical skills. In Year 2, students continue with Drama and Theatre plus one other Arts subject, progressing into more advanced and specialised modules such as Musical Theatre in Context, Modern Drama and Contemporary World Theatre and Film, Stagecraft and Theatre Design, Writing for Stage and Screen, Socially Engaged Theatre, and Theatre and Language. Year 3 is fully dedicated to Drama and Theatre, allowing students to focus intensively on their discipline through options such as International Theatre Experience (study abroad), Third Year Theatre Production, Work Experience, Acting and Directing, and Theatre for Children. This immersive year enhances creative practice and professional development. In Year 4, students once again combine Drama and Theatre with one other Arts subject while completing advanced modules including Arts and Cultural Producing, Practice-Based Research Methods, Professional Development in Performance, and a Practice-Based Research Project. The program blends theory, creative practice, and professional preparation, equipping graduates with artistic, critical, and production skills for careers in theatre and related creative industries.
