ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Galway is a public research university located in Galway, Ireland, with a history dating back to its founding in 1845 as Queen’s College, Galway. It opened for teaching in 1849 and underwent several name changes, becoming University College, Galway in 1908, National University of Ireland Galway in 1997, and officially adopting the name University of Galway in 2022, with legal effect in 2024. The university is a member of the Coimbra Group, a network of long-established European universities. Its campus is situated near the city centre along the River Corrib and includes the historic Quadrangle building, designed in a Tudor Gothic style inspired by the University of Oxford. Over time, the institution evolved under various higher education reforms, becoming a constituent university of the National University of Ireland. Significant campus development has taken place since the 1970s, with major investments in academic, research, and student facilities. In the 21st century, the university has expanded its research capacity, strengthened its commitment to equality and inclusion, and launched strategic initiatives focused on sustainability, innovation, and global challenges.
