COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Mathematical Modelling at UL is a one-year full-time postgraduate program, with an option to complete it part-time over two years, delivered on campus and structured across autumn, spring, and summer semesters. It focuses on developing advanced skills in applying mathematics to real-world systems through analytical, numerical, and computational methods. In the autumn semester, students study core modules such as Advanced Methods I, which covers techniques for analysing and solving complex mathematical problems, and Scientific Computation, which develops numerical and programming skills for scientific and engineering applications. They also select elective modules from areas including continuum mechanics, fluid mechanics, stochastic processes, financial mathematics, statistical modelling, and perturbation methods. In the spring semester, core modules include Advanced Methods II, focusing on partial differential equations, Mathematical Geoscience for environmental systems modelling, and Mathematical Biology and Physiology for biological applications. Additional electives allow specialisation in areas such as inverse problems, dynamical systems, time series analysis, statistical learning, and financial modelling. Throughout the program, students learn through lectures, workshops, practical work, and guided research, supported by regular feedback. The course concludes with a summer research project, often linked to MACSI industry collaborations, where students produce a professional-level report demonstrating their ability to apply mathematical modelling to complex scientific or industrial problems.
