COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biomedical Device Materials at UL is a one-year, 90 ECTS postgraduate program delivered over two semesters and a summer period, focused on advanced materials science for medical and biomedical applications. In Semester 1, students study advanced analytical techniques such as microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray analysis and diffraction, spectroscopy methods (IR, UV, Raman, and NMR), particle size analysis, and specimen preparation. They also learn about the structure of materials, including structure–property relationships in metals, polymers, and ceramics, phase transformations, strengthening mechanisms, and failure processes. Another key area is advanced materials processing, covering manufacturing methods for different material types and coating technologies. The semester also includes management systems and regulatory affairs relevant to biomedical device manufacturing, ensuring understanding of industrial standards and compliance. In Semester 2, students progress to more advanced analytical methods and computational modelling tools used in materials research and development, while also exploring current research challenges in materials science. Students choose specialised electives related to biomedical materials, including biomaterials science, polymer therapeutics, engineering alloys, and plasticity in conventional and 3D-printed metals. A major component is a 45-credit research project supervised by leading experts, using advanced laboratory equipment, often resulting in publications or intellectual property development. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in biomedical device research, development, and innovation.
