COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials at UL is a structured, full-time program delivered over two semesters and a summer period, using a 90 ECTS modular system. It focuses on advanced materials science, characterisation techniques, and industrial applications. In Semester 1, students study analytical techniques such as microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, diffraction methods, spectroscopy (IR, UV, Raman, and NMR), particle size analysis, and specimen preparation. They also explore the structure of materials, including relationships between structure and mechanical properties in metals, polymers, and ceramics, as well as phase transformations, strengthening mechanisms, and failure processes. Another key area is advanced materials processing, covering manufacturing techniques for metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites, along with coating technologies. Management systems are also studied to understand industrial standards and quality control in manufacturing environments. In Semester 2, students progress to advanced analytical methods, modelling software for materials analysis, and research-focused topics that address current challenges in materials science. Electives allow specialisation in areas such as aerospace metallic materials, composite structures, materials selection and design, surface degradation and protection, engineering alloys, and plasticity in conventional and 3D-printed metals. The program also includes a major research project across semesters, enabling practical application of knowledge and engagement with advanced materials research problems.
