COURSE CURRICULUM

The MEng in Cyber Security at UL is a one-year, full-time, campus-based postgraduate program designed to develop advanced expertise in securing digital systems and networks. Teaching is delivered across autumn and spring semesters, followed by a major engineering project completed in the summer semester. In the autumn semester, students study core modules including Cryptography and Security Fundamentals, which introduces modern threats, vulnerabilities, and cryptographic techniques; Cryptographic Mathematics, which focuses on public key systems and cipher analysis; Converged Networks, covering IT and operational technology communication systems; Advanced Programming, focusing on large-scale software development; and Software Engineering, which develops object-oriented design and team-based project skills. In the spring semester, students progress to modules such as Log Files and Event Analysis for cyber threat detection, Biometrics covering identity verification technologies, Communication and Security Protocols for secure systems design, and Network and Host Security focusing on attack prevention and defence strategies. A research preparation module introduces project planning and methodology. The program concludes in the summer with a major engineering project where students design and implement a cybersecurity solution under academic supervision. Overall, the course combines theory, practical skills, and research to prepare graduates for advanced roles in cybersecurity, digital forensics, and secure system design across industry sectors.
