COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences Honours Sociology at UL provides a structured study of society, social behaviour, and social change over four years. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of sociology through basic modules that explore key concepts and ways of understanding social life. Year 2 builds on this foundation with core modules in sociological theory and research methods, alongside a cooperative education placement, and optional modules covering topics such as gender, media, welfare, race, and economic sociology. In Year 3, students advance to more complex theoretical and methodological study, including contemporary sociological theory, quantitative research methods, and an Erasmus or exchange opportunity abroad. They also choose from specialised topics such as crime and deviance, globalisation, inequality, youth, gender perspectives, and indigenous communities. In Year 4, students specialise further by selecting advanced modules in areas such as health, work, political sociology, mental health, internet studies, migration, and urban sociology, along with seminar-based learning. Across the program, students develop strong skills in critical thinking, research, and social analysis, enabling them to understand and interpret complex social issues. The degree prepares graduates for careers in research, policy, community work, social services, education, and other fields focused on addressing social inequality and understanding human society.
