COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences Honours Politics and International Relations at UL provides a structured study of political systems from introductory to advanced levels over four years. In Year 1, students are introduced to core ideas in politics and international relations, building a foundation in how political systems and global interactions work. Year 2 expands this knowledge through modules such as Irish politics, comparative European politics, international relations, political theory, and research methods, alongside a cooperative education placement that provides real-world experience. In Year 3, students deepen their understanding through advanced topics including EU politics, global political economy, capitalism and social justice, and research methods, while also having the option to study abroad through Erasmus or exchange programs. Year 4 allows students to specialise further by choosing from a wide range of advanced modules such as global governance, world politics, terrorism and extremism, nationalism and conflict, EU policy making, foreign policy, migration, and democracy challenges. Throughout the program, students develop strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, enabling them to understand complex political issues at local, regional, and global levels. The degree prepares graduates for careers in government, international organisations, policy development, journalism, and further academic study, with a strong emphasis on both theory and applied political analysis.
