COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences (Honours) Linguistics with TESOL at the University of Limerick is a four-year program that explores language as a scientific and social system while also training students in teaching English to speakers of other languages. In the first year, students are introduced to core areas of linguistics, including general linguistics and sociolinguistics, which examine how language is structured and how it functions in society. In the second year, students develop research skills in language analysis and may study topics such as language and society in Ireland or language technology, alongside a cooperative education work placement that provides practical experience. The third year includes an Erasmus or international exchange opportunity and advanced study in language research, as well as modules in TESOL and media discourse analysis. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics such as applied linguistics, multilingualism, language policy, politics, and power, alongside further TESOL training and specialised elective modules. Throughout the program, students gain strong analytical, research, and communication skills, learning to understand language in diverse social and professional contexts. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, language teaching, research, translation, media, and communication-related fields, with a strong understanding of how language shapes global and local societies.
