COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences (Honours) History at the University of Limerick is a structured four-year program that explores major themes, events, and interpretations of history across Ireland, Europe, and the wider world. In the first year, students are introduced to the study of history through modules that examine historical practice and key themes such as gender, power, identity, and Ireland’s role in global history from 1500 to 1950. The second year expands into specialised areas including early modern Europe, Irish history, the Middle East, and the evolution of Ireland’s political and cultural identity, alongside a cooperative education placement that provides practical experience. In the third year, students can participate in an Erasmus exchange and study advanced topics such as historical writing, the European Reformation, the Enlightenment, and modern Irish political history. The final year allows students to specialise further through advanced modules covering topics such as the Irish conflict, Cold War history, empire, revolution, cultural change, and historical controversies. Across the program, students develop strong research, analytical, and writing skills while learning to critically interpret historical evidence. Graduates are prepared for careers in education, research, media, heritage, and public service, with a deep understanding of historical change and its relevance to the modern world.
