COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences (Honours) Geography at the University of Limerick is a four-year program that builds a strong understanding of both human and physical geography. In the first year, students are introduced to the core areas of human geography and physical geography, providing a foundation for studying how people interact with environments and how natural systems operate. In the second year, students explore themes such as earth systems, population dynamics, and the relationship between science and society, while also gaining valuable real-world experience through a cooperative education placement. The third year expands learning through more specialised topics, including migration, mobility, landscape evolution, and geographical research methods, alongside an Erasmus or international exchange opportunity to broaden academic and cultural perspectives. In the final year, students study advanced topics such as natural hazards, environmental issues, sustainability, and cultural and historical geography. They also complete a major final-year research project across two semesters, allowing them to apply their skills to independent geographical investigation. Throughout the program, students develop strong analytical, research, and fieldwork skills, including the use of modern geographical techniques. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental planning, research, education, policy, and related fields, with the ability to understand and address complex spatial and environmental challenges.
