COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences (Honours) in Digital Culture and Communications at the University of Limerick is a structured four-year program that explores media, communication, and digital culture from both practical and theoretical perspectives. In the first year, students are introduced to digital media and communication alongside social media and society, building an early understanding of how digital platforms shape modern interaction. In the second year, students begin to specialise through modules such as visual cultural studies, sociology of media, and technical communication, while also gaining real-world experience through a work placement. The third year deepens academic and practical knowledge with subjects like film studies, media discourse analysis, applied linguistics, and writing for new media, alongside an Erasmus or exchange opportunity to broaden international experience. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics including digital arts, European cinema, sociology of gender and popular culture, media challenges in the digital age, and professional applied linguistics. Throughout the program, students develop strong analytical, creative, and communication skills, learning how media, language, and culture interact in contemporary society. Graduates are prepared for careers in media, communications, content creation, cultural analysis, and other digital or media-related industries, with the ability to critically understand and produce digital content.
