COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Therapy at UL is structured over four years to develop skilled, evidence-based practitioners who can support individuals with communication and swallowing difficulties. In Year 1, students build a foundation in anatomy and physiology, psychology, linguistics, sociology of health, and introductory speech and language therapy practice, alongside observation-based practice education. This stage introduces core knowledge of human development and communication systems. Year 2 deepens clinical understanding through advanced linguistics, core frameworks for speech and language therapy, and focused study of communication needs across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Students also begin formal practice education placements and learn research methods relevant to health and education. In Year 3, the focus shifts to clinical conditions and specialist areas such as swallowing, stuttering, hearing, voice, and augmentative communication, alongside advanced clinical decision-making and research project work. Practice education continues to strengthen hands-on clinical competence. In Year 4, students engage in advanced practice education, complete a major research project, and study contemporary issues in the profession, including innovation in health and social care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and complex clinical practice. Across the program, students progressively develop theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competence, preparing them for careers in healthcare settings where they support communication, rehabilitation, and patient wellbeing across the lifespan.
