COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Product Design and Technology at the University of Limerick is a four-year program that develops students into skilled, innovative, and responsible designers capable of creating practical solutions for real-world needs. In the first year, students build a foundation in design thinking, engineering science, materials, manufacturing processes, electrotechnology, and technical drawing through studio-based learning and hands-on model making. The second year expands into more advanced design studios, focusing on ergonomics, design research, visualisation, digital modelling, and contemporary design culture, helping students strengthen both creative and technical abilities. In the third year, learning becomes more applied through industry-focused design studios, community projects, or study abroad opportunities, alongside modules in environmental sustainability, advanced modelling, and design ergonomics. A cooperative education placement provides valuable real-world industry experience. The final year focuses on independent and professional-level work, where students complete major design projects while also studying enterprise creation, project planning, design for manufacture, and the psychology of design. Across the program, students are trained to combine creativity with engineering and user-centred thinking, preparing them for careers in product design, innovation, and technology-driven industries. The course emphasises practical experience, sustainability, and industry engagement to ensure graduates are workplace-ready.
