COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physical Education at the University of Limerick is a four-year program that prepares students to become qualified post-primary teachers of Physical Education, alongside a second teaching subject. In Year 1, students study the foundations of movement, motor learning, health and performance fitness, team and individual sports, and educational theory, including psychology and digital competence for teaching, supported by elective modules. Year 2 develops practical teaching skills through modules in aesthetic and expressive activities, adventure and water-based activities, subject pedagogy in physical education, planning for learning, understanding classroom practice, and a key school placement experience. Year 3 deepens professional understanding with modules in adapted physical education, sociological perspectives on teaching, motor learning and development, curriculum and assessment, diversity and inclusion, and advanced subject pedagogy, alongside electives and continued pedagogical development. Year 4 focuses on professional consolidation through a second major school placement, policy and provision in physical education, physical activity and youth sport, and the role of the teacher as a professional educator, along with additional elective study. Across the program, students combine academic learning with extensive practical teaching experience, enabling them to develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge required to promote physical activity, health, and sport in schools.
