COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Financial Mathematics at the University of Limerick is a four-year degree designed for students interested in mathematics applied to finance, business, and economics. It develops strong quantitative, statistical, and computing skills to analyse financial markets, industrial problems, and commercial decision-making. In Year 1, students build core foundations in calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics, and computer software, alongside introductory modules in accounting or economics. Year 2 advances into more specialised mathematical topics such as differential equations, numerical analysis, probability models, operations research, finance, and applied data analysis, strengthening analytical and problem-solving abilities. Year 3 deepens financial mathematics through modules in complex analysis, statistical inference, advanced data analysis, and financial mathematics, alongside a cooperative education placement that provides real industry experience. Year 4 focuses on advanced topics including stochastic processes, stochastic differential equations, time series analysis, and mathematical models of investments, along with optional modules in areas such as fluid mechanics, dynamical systems, and mathematical modelling. Students also complete a major final-year project. Overall, the program combines rigorous mathematical training with financial theory and practical application, preparing graduates for careers in banking, finance, data analysis, risk management, or further postgraduate study in mathematical and quantitative disciplines.
