COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Education) Honours in Biology with Chemistry is a four-year program that integrates scientific study with professional teacher education, accumulating a total of 240 ECTS credits. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in biology and chemistry through modules such as general, inorganic, and physical chemistry, biology, and anatomy, alongside education-focused subjects including philosophical and psychological perspectives on learning and digital teaching skills. Year 2 develops both subject knowledge and teaching ability with modules in organic and analytical chemistry, microbiology, and plant physiology, while also introducing planning for learning, science pedagogy, and a significant school placement that provides practical classroom experience. In Year 3, students continue with advanced chemistry topics such as inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry, alongside biology modules including animal diversity, cellular biology, biochemistry, and ecology, while also studying curriculum development, assessment, inclusion, and diversity in education, as well as advanced pedagogy. The final year focuses on professional teaching practice and specialised scientific areas such as nanotechnology, advanced organic chemistry, genetics, and human nutrition, combined with extended school placement and professional development. Overall, the program prepares students with strong scientific expertise and teaching skills for careers as qualified second-level science teachers.
