COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Engineering Honours in Civil Engineering at UL is an accredited program that prepares students for careers in designing, constructing, and maintaining essential infrastructure such as buildings, roads, bridges, water systems, and environmental protection works. In the first year, students follow a common engineering entry route where they build foundational knowledge in mathematics, mechanics, materials, chemistry, and engineering computing while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills through practical design projects. In second year, learning becomes more applied through team-based problem-solving and design work in areas such as structural analysis, hydrology, building materials, soil mechanics, and fluid and energy systems. Third year focuses on professional practice, including an integrated design project that simulates real engineering work involving collaboration, structural design, surveying, and safety considerations, followed by an extended cooperative education placement with industry. In fourth year, students specialise further through advanced modules in geotechnical engineering, water management, energy-efficient buildings, reinforced concrete design, and environmental engineering, alongside a substantial final year project. Optional modules allow exploration of areas such as wind and ocean energy, environmental impact assessment, construction management, and forensic engineering. Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning and industry experience, preparing graduates for professional engineering roles in Ireland and internationally.
