COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical and Biochemical Engineering degree at UL is a structured program that builds strong foundations in science, mathematics, and engineering before progressing into advanced chemical and process engineering topics. In Year 1, students study core subjects such as engineering mathematics, chemistry, physics, materials science, and introductory chemical engineering principles, alongside computational tools and thermodynamics. Year 2 develops more specialised knowledge in areas like fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, process control, organic and physical chemistry, bioprocess engineering, and chemical plant management, while also introducing design methods and industrial applications. In Year 3, students complete a cooperative education placement, gaining practical industry experience, while also studying advanced topics such as reaction engineering, separations, process design software, and chemical engineering thermodynamics. In Year 4, students choose between a Bachelor of Engineering pathway or an extended Master of Engineering option. This final stage includes advanced subjects such as sustainable energy processes, pharmaceutical formulation, transport processes, batch processing, and process troubleshooting, along with major design projects and research preparation in the master’s route. Across the program, there is a strong focus on applying engineering science to real-world industries including pharmaceuticals, energy, and bioprocessing. The degree prepares graduates for professional roles in sustainable and high-demand engineering sectors with strong technical and practical expertise.
