COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at UL is structured to build a strong foundation in understanding society and how it changes over time. In first year, students are introduced to core sociological ideas through modules that explore key concepts and ways of thinking about social life. In second year, they deepen their knowledge through classical sociological theory and research methods, alongside optional modules that cover topics such as gender, media, race, welfare, and economic sociology. Students also complete a cooperative education work placement, gaining practical experience outside the classroom. In third year, advanced theory and quantitative research methods are studied, while students also explore specialised topics such as globalisation, crime and deviance, inequality, youth, indigenous studies, and economic and gender inequality. An Erasmus or exchange opportunity allows students to study abroad and broaden their academic perspective. In final year, students choose from a wide range of advanced modules covering areas such as health, mental health, work, the body, internet society, migration, urban sociology, political sociology, and crime. Across the program, students develop strong analytical, critical thinking, and research skills, enabling them to understand complex social issues and the forces shaping modern societies at local and global levels.
