COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics with TESOL is a four-year program that explores the scientific study of language alongside training in teaching English to speakers of other languages. In the first year, students are introduced to core areas of linguistics, including general linguistics and sociolinguistics, which examine how language functions in society. In the second year, students develop research skills in language analysis and choose specialist modules such as language and society in Ireland, or language technology, alongside a cooperative education work placement that provides practical experience. The third year includes an Erasmus or exchange opportunity abroad, further enhancing linguistic competence and cultural awareness, as well as continued training in language research methods. Students also begin optional study in TESOL or media discourse analysis. In the final year, learners study applied linguistics and advanced topics such as multilingualism, language policy, politics, and power, while also selecting further specialised modules in TESOL or linguistics. The program combines theoretical understanding of language with practical teaching skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, language teaching, communication, research, and international or multicultural environments. It also builds strong analytical, research, and communication skills relevant to a wide range of professions.
