COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Irish Music at University of Limerick follows a four-year structure that combines performance training, academic study, and professional development. In the first year, students build core musical skills through individual instrumental or vocal lessons, ensemble work, and modules exploring Irish, world, and popular music traditions, alongside a range of electives. The second year deepens performance practice while introducing Irish music and dance studies, performing arts technology, global popular music, and vocational studies related to education and community engagement. In the third year, students undertake a cooperative education placement, gaining practical experience in areas such as performance, teaching, media, or arts management, followed by further performance development, research skills, and studies in arts and health, with an optional international exchange. The fourth year focuses on advanced performance training, including preparation for a final recital, collaborative practicum work, and professional skills for the arts industry. Students also complete a substantial final year research project, supported by individual supervision, and explore specialised topics in ethnomusicology. Throughout the program, elective modules allow students to broaden their artistic and academic experience, ensuring graduates develop strong creative, analytical, and professional skills for careers in music and the wider cultural sector.
