COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in History provides a structured yet flexible program that allows students to explore a wide range of historical periods, themes, and regions while developing strong analytical and research skills. In the first year, students are introduced to historical methods and key themes such as gender, power, identity, and global connections between Ireland and the wider world. In the second year, students select specialised modules covering topics such as early modern Europe, Irish history, the Middle East, and historical transformations from ancient to modern times, alongside a cooperative education work placement that offers practical experience. The third year includes further specialised study and an Erasmus or exchange opportunity abroad, with modules focusing on topics such as revolution, religion, power, and Irish and European history. In the final year, students choose from advanced modules covering diverse subjects including political change, cultural history, empire, conflict, and social transformation, allowing them to deepen their expertise in specific areas of interest. Across all years, the program emphasises critical engagement with historical sources and debates, encouraging students to understand how history is constructed and interpreted. Graduates develop strong skills in analysis, communication, and research, preparing them for careers in education, research, media, public service, and related fields.
