COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Limerick follows a structured four-year pathway that combines core literary studies with flexibility and practical experience. In the first year, students build a foundation through modules focused on novels, short fiction, and early modern poetry and drama, developing essential reading and analytical skills. In the second year, students are introduced to literary theory, which deepens their understanding of how texts are interpreted, alongside a cooperative education work placement that provides valuable real-world experience. During this stage, students also begin to specialise by choosing from a range of topics such as Romantic literature, American literature, Irish literary movements, or Gothic writing. The third year includes an Erasmus or exchange placement abroad, offering international exposure, along with further study in areas like Victorian literature and global or postcolonial writing. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics such as literary modernism and contemporary literature, while selecting elective modules that may include creative writing, feminist theory, African literature, or studies of major authors. This progression allows students to tailor their academic interests while developing strong analytical, cultural, and communication skills for diverse career paths.
