COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Languages at University of Limerick is structured over four years to develop advanced language proficiency alongside cultural understanding and professional skills. In the first year, students study two chosen languages through modules in language, culture, and society, while also taking linguistics and a range of electives such as marketing, law, or politics and international relations, along with options in literature and cultural studies. The second year continues language development and introduces subjects like language and technology, combined with further electives and a cooperative education placement that provides practical work experience. In the third year, students spend one semester on an Erasmus or international exchange program, followed by continued language study and the option to specialise further with electives including TESOL or technical writing. The fourth year focuses on advanced language modules, allowing students to refine their fluency and cultural knowledge, alongside completing an applied languages project that demonstrates their academic and practical learning. Additional electives in areas such as cultural theory, European cinema, and travel literature further enhance their understanding. Overall, the program offers a balanced mix of language mastery, cultural insight, and career-oriented skills.
