COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development equips students with the practical and analytical skills to critically engage with challenges in agriculture and rural transformation. Throughout the program, students develop the ability to design and complete a research proposal focused on a key sustainable agriculture or rural development issue, applying both field and desk-based research methods. They gain advanced problem-solving abilities relevant to real-world agricultural and rural contexts, learning to evaluate strategies and formulate practical, context-sensitive solutions.Students are trained to plan and implement strategic communications campaigns aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD). The course also explores how SARD strategies are developed and applied in Ireland, across the EU, and internationally, encouraging comparative analysis and cross-cultural understanding. Key topics include rural diversification, agricultural sustainability, policy-making and innovation in rural enterprises. Students will develop a deep understanding of the contexts that shape policy and practice in sustainable agriculture, including environmental, social, economic and institutional factors.The program is built around core modules in research methods, agricultural policy, rural enterprise, and sustainable agriculture, complemented by a summer minor thesis. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies, with topics such as organic agriculture, behavioural change, rural placemaking, agricultural education, and global food systems. Graduates are well prepared to work in policy-making, advisory roles, NGOs, education, or as consultants across the agri-food, sustainability, and rural development sectors.
