COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Literature and Culture equips students with the analytical, research, and communication skills essential for advanced literary and cultural studies. Through an intensive combination of seminars and supervised research, students develop the ability to articulate complex ideas and arguments clearly and effectively in essays, presentations, and research proposals. The program fosters strong independent research skills, enabling students to identify viable research topics and develop them into well-structured, critical projects.Students gain a deep awareness of the historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts of literature, allowing them to explore and evaluate texts within broader aesthetic, philosophical, and political frameworks. They engage with a wide range of literary and cultural materials across time periods and genres, drawing on methodologies that include close reading, archival research, digital humanities, and theoretical critique. The course places strong emphasis on developing mastery in textual analysis and literary theory, while also promoting the ability to make cross-temporal and cross-cultural connections that illuminate wider patterns and movements in literature and culture.Recent modules reflect the breadth of the program, including Chaucer and the Fourteenth Century, American Modernism at Home, Re-reading the Renaissance, Memory Cultures, Social Network Analysis and Fiction, and World-Systems, World-Literature: Mapping the Planet. These offerings support students in expanding their critical understanding while exploring new, often interdisciplinary approaches. By the end of the program, students will have developed the intellectual confidence and academic skill set to pursue careers in education, research, publishing, cultural industries, or to advance to further postgraduate study.
