COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Geography provides a comprehensive and immersive learning experience that equips students with a robust understanding of both theoretical and applied aspects of geography. Through small-group seminars, project-based learning, and collaborative teamwork, students engage deeply with key concepts and contemporary debates. A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on fieldwork, which includes a series of field trips in Dublin and the surrounding region. These field experiences develop core geographical skills and enhance students’ ability to interpret and analyse diverse landscapes and spatial phenomena.Students undertake broad training in political, economic, urban, environmental, climate, and physical geography, allowing them to explore interdisciplinary approaches to pressing global and local challenges. The program also places strong emphasis on research, offering students the opportunity to pursue an independent project in a specialised area of interest under the guidance of an academic supervisor. This research component enables students to deepen their expertise and refine their critical thinking and analytical skills.Upon completion of the MA, students will be able to articulate the importance of geographical context in addressing major societal and environmental issues. They will have developed the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively across different media, demonstrate mastery of literature in a geographic subfield, and apply geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with confidence. Students will also have honed their independent research capabilities and collaborative skills, both in classroom settings and during fieldwork. The program ultimately fosters well-rounded, spatially literate graduates who are equipped to address the complexities of a changing world in a variety of professional and academic contexts.
