COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy program at UCD offers a rich and diverse curriculum that encourages students to explore key philosophical ideas while developing strong critical thinking and argumentation skills. In first year, students are introduced to a broad range of philosophical traditions and questions, covering topics such as ethics, existentialism, logic, Eastern philosophy, and critical thinking. Modules are designed to develop analytical skills and a foundational understanding of the discipline. As part of the Social Sciences program, students also take the core module “Societal Challenges in the 21st Century,” linking philosophical inquiry to real-world issues. In second year, students deepen their knowledge through modules like Applied Ethics, Knowledge & Scepticism, Logic, Feminism & Gender Justice, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy & Literature, Plato, and Phenomenology. These modules focus on specific areas and thinkers, giving students a more advanced grasp of key concepts and debates. In third and fourth year, students can apply to study abroad or undertake an internship. A wide variety of optional modules are available, such as Science, Perception, & Reality, Personal Identity, Wittgenstein, Critical Theory, Philosophy of Law, Nietzsche, and Aristotle. These upper-level modules are designed to engage students in in-depth philosophical research and analysis. There is also an option to switch into a Single Major in Philosophy at the end of second year, allowing students to graduate with a BA in Philosophy. Teaching methods include interactive lectures, small-group tutorials, and collaborative discussion. Assessment formats are varied and may include traditional exams, take-home essays, online tests, presentations, and group projects, ensuring that students develop a range of academic and communication skills. Overall, the program provides a well-rounded and intellectually engaging education in Philosophy, preparing students for further study or a range of careers that value analytical reasoning, ethical insight, and clear communication.
