COURSE CURRICULUM

The UCD Computer Science degree, offered through the DN201 common entry route, provides a comprehensive education in both the theoretical and practical aspects of computing. The curriculum is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in computer science fundamentals while also introducing them to the modern programming languages and technologies used in today’s industry. Key topics include programming, algorithms, software engineering, computer architecture, cloud computing, cybersecurity, networks, and advanced areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Programming is taught using widely used languages such as C, Java, and Python.In first year, students are introduced to core concepts through modules such as Algorithmic Problem Solving, Computer Programming, Functional Programming, Software Engineering Project, and foundational mathematics and statistics. In second year, students deepen their knowledge with modules like Digital Systems, Databases, Object-Oriented Programming, Operating Systems, Data Structures, and Algorithms, along with further mathematics for computer science.Third year focuses on specialised topics including Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, Big Data Programming, Web Development, and Graph Algorithms. Students also complete either a five-month industry internship or an advanced software engineering project. In final year, students undertake an individual Computer Science Project and can choose from a wide range of advanced modules such as Deep Learning, Distributed Systems, Cloud Computing, Human-Centred AI, Generative AI (Language Models), Game Development, Optimisation, and Advanced Networking.The course is full-time, and learning takes place through lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and independent study. Assessment methods vary by module and may include written exams, continuous assessment, practical assignments, and online components. Each student’s timetable is individually tailored based on their module choices. The program’s balance of foundational knowledge and cutting-edge topics prepares graduates for a wide range of careers in software development, data science, AI, cybersecurity, and more.
