COURSE CURRICULUM

In UCD’s Mechanical Engineering program, students begin with a common first year shared by all engineering disciplines. This foundational year includes modules in Calculus, Chemistry, Creativity in Design, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Energy Engineering, Engineering Computing, Linear Algebra, Mechanics, Mathematics, and Physics. These subjects provide a strong base in scientific and technical principles essential for all engineering specialisations.From second to fifth year, students begin to focus on core Mechanical Engineering modules. These include Advanced Metals Processing, Mechanical Engineering Design, Mechanics of Fluids, Heat Transfer, Electrical & Electronic Circuits, Materials Science & Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Thermodynamics, Mechanics of Solids, and Applied Dynamics. Additional modules in areas like Modelling and Simulation, Data Analytics for Engineers, Measurement & Instrumentation, Electrical Machines, Professional Engineering, and Statistics & Probability further build the technical and analytical skills needed in the field.The course structure includes lectures, tutorials, laboratory-based workshops, group projects, and independent study. Assessment is based on a mix of continuous assessment and end-of-trimester exams. In the final year, students complete a research project and submit a written report.At the end of third year, students may progress to a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (BE) or a 5-year integrated Master of Engineering (ME) pathway, depending on academic performance. The ME program includes a six-to-eight-month Professional Work Experience (PWE) placement in fourth year. These internships, often paid, are with leading companies such as AbbVie, Accenture, Jaguar Land Rover, Logitech, and OHB Germany, giving students real-world experience and industry exposure.
