COURSE CURRICULUM

The Humanities (DN530) course with a focus on History offers a comprehensive four-year program where students engage deeply with historical study, research methods, and historiography. Those who choose History as a single major will follow a structured path of modules across each academic year, along with opportunities for internships and studying abroad in the third year. In the final year, students design and conduct their own independent research projects, write a dissertation under academic supervision, participate in a dedicated research skills workshop, and help organize an end-of-year conference showcase. In first year, students are introduced to a broad spectrum of historical topics such as Rome to the Renaissance, The United States from 1776, Radicals and Revolutionaries in Global History, Ireland’s English Centuries, Modern Ireland 1800-2000, and Modern Europe 1500-2000. Joint-Honours students also take the Creating History module to build foundational research and analytical skills in a small-group setting. In second year, students begin to specialize by selecting modules based on their personal interests, including topics like Islam and Christianity, Nazi Germany, A History of Anti-Immigration, The Irish at War, 1914-1998, and Global Asia. The third year further sharpens research skills through small-group, seminar-based modules where students conduct primary source research, give presentations, and complete individual research projects. Optional study abroad programs are also available. Modules in third year include Genocide and Mass Violence, Central Asia from the Tsars to Stalin, Modern Japan, Slavery and the New World, The Irish Revolution, Manufacturing Truth, Biography and History, Madness and Civilisation, and Sexuality and Society in the Middle Ages. Overall, the course is designed to provide deep subject knowledge and strong research capabilities, preparing students for advanced academic work or a wide range of professional careers.
