COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Applied Environmental Geoscience at University College Cork is structured into two parts, combining academic learning with practical research experience. Part I consists of taught modules totaling 60 credits, delivered through field studies, lectures, practical classes, seminars, and workshops. These modules provide comprehensive training in key areas of environmental geoscience, including environmental monitoring, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, and geoinformatics. Core topics such as principles of environmental assessment, contaminated land evaluation, hydrogeology, and environmental regulation equip students with the theoretical foundations and applied skills needed for careers in environmental assessment and resource management. Modules on offshore geology, applied geophysics, and geographic information systems help students develop specialist expertise relevant to both land and marine environments. Practical components ensure hands-on experience in hydrogeological and geotechnical investigation techniques that are in high demand across the environmental sector.Part II of the program involves a 30-credit independent research project carried out between April and September. This dissertation allows students to apply what they have learned to a real-world environmental geoscience issue, often in collaboration with industry. The project promotes independent critical thinking, scientific data analysis, and effective communication. Together, these elements ensure graduates are equipped with the professional and academic skills necessary for careers in environmental consultancy, water resources, engineering geology, regulatory agencies, or further research.
