COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Public Health (MPH) at University College Cork is structured into two parts: Part I, which comprises taught modules, and Part II, a dissertation. In Part I, all students complete 45 credits across core modules covering essential topics such as principles and practice of public health, applied research, public health informatics, leadership, qualitative research, health economics, and global health perspectives. These modules are designed to build a solid foundation in public health theory, research, and practice.Students then choose one of three specialised pathways, each contributing an additional 25 credits. The Health Promotion pathway focuses on the principles and practice of health promotion, behavioural change, global and environmental health, and systematic review methods. The Health Protection pathway covers multidisciplinary approaches to health protection, microbiology, environmental health, and systematic review. The Epidemiology & Biostatistics pathway delves into advanced epidemiological methods, biostatistical techniques, survival analysis, and systematic review.Upon successful completion of Part I, students progress to Part II, which involves a 20-credit minor dissertation. This research project allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to a public health topic of their choice under academic supervision.The program also offers exemptions for eligible applicants. Graduates of UCC's Postgraduate Certificate in Health Protection or Public Health may be exempt from specific modules if enrolling within five years of award. Similarly, those holding a BSc in Public Health or Public Health Sciences from UCC are exempt from the Principles and Practice of Public Health module under the same timeframe. This structure ensures flexibility and recognises prior learning while maintaining a high standard of education. Overall, the MPH is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program that prepares students for leadership roles in public health practice, policy, and research.
