The BSocSc (Youth and Community Work) degree is a comprehensive three-year program that combines theoretical knowledge with practical training to prepare students for careers in the youth and community sectors. In Year 1, students complete 60 credits focused on foundational knowledge and skills. Core modules include Introduction to Youth and Community Work, Social Analysis, Principles and Practice of Youth and Community Work, and Introduction to Social Policy. The year also includes Placement I, where students gain practical experience, as well as modules on Contemporary Issues and Informal and Global Education in Youth and Community Work settings.In Year 2, students deepen their understanding of communication, policy, and individual and group work within community settings. Core modules include Communications and Community Youth Work, Working with Individuals and Groups in a Community Youth Work Setting, Social Analysis II, Social Policy II, Introduction to Research Methods, and Placement II. This year builds critical skills in research and analysis while continuing professional development through placement.Year 3 integrates advanced theoretical concepts with applied practice. Core modules include Law, Rights and Equal Opportunities, Project Planning and Leadership Skills, and Sustainability, Environmental and Social Justice Issues. Other key modules are Social Policy III, Reflective Action in Youth and Community Work, Research Methods II, and Placement III. Students also select one 5-credit elective from a broad list including topics such as Mental Health, Poverty and Social Exclusion, Racism, and Education and Welfare. These electives allow students to tailor their learning to specific areas of interest or emerging social issues.Overall, the program provides a well-rounded education through classroom learning, research, and three work placements. It develops students’ critical thinking, leadership, policy awareness, and hands-on skills needed to support individuals and communities while promoting equality, inclusion, and social justice.
