The BSc in Public Health Sciences is a four-year interdisciplinary degree that equips students with a wide range of skills to assess, manage, and improve population health. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of public health through core modules such as Epidemiology I, Introduction to Public Health, Determinants of Health, Microbiology in Society, and Sociology of Health. Additional topics include health information systems, health statistics, and the environmental influences on human health. Students also select from a range of electives in subjects like biochemistry, languages, international politics, and physiology, allowing for academic flexibility and personal interest development.In Year 2, the program deepens students’ understanding with modules including Epidemiology II, Principles of Social Research, Public Health Research Report, and Introduction to Health Promotion. Students explore food and industrial microbiology, nutrition, health policy, public health system planning, and sociology, gaining insight into how public health is managed and influenced by broader societal structures. The curriculum also includes modules focused on diversity and the body, providing critical perspectives on health and illness.Year 3 includes a 12-week work placement, giving students practical experience in real-world settings. Academic modules such as Epidemiology III, Data Analysis, Public Health Practice, and Medical Microbiology support the development of advanced research and analytical skills. Other topics include infectious disease transmission, nutrition across life stages, professional ethics, and global urban health challenges.In Year 4, students complete a Final Year Project and study specialised subjects including Health Economics, Health Protection, Public Health Advocacy, and Global Health. Additional modules address issues like humanitarian action, gender and development, and the role of science in public controversy. By graduation, students are well-prepared for careers in public health, research, health promotion, and policy, or for further postgraduate study.
