COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Finance is a comprehensive four-year degree that blends corporate finance and financial economics, offering students strong analytical, technical, and practical knowledge in the field. In Year 1, students build a solid foundation with core modules in financial and management accounting, investment analysis, asset valuation, and economic principles. Quantitative and data analysis skills are developed through modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistical techniques. Year 2 focuses on more advanced financial reporting, taxation, corporate financial policy, and economic forecasting. Students also begin preparing for their professional placement with a dedicated placement planning module.In Year 3, students deepen their understanding of multinational finance, governance and regulation in financial organisations, and insurance principles. Advanced data analysis and case studies in corporate finance further enhance applied skills. A key feature of the third year is a six-month internship in a financial organisation in Ireland or the UK, arranged by UCC. This placement provides essential industry experience and helps bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice. Students also complete a research report based on their placement experience.Year 4 focuses on specialised areas such as corporate valuation, securities and portfolio analysis, money and banking, international finance, and strategic economic behaviour. Elective options allow for further specialisation in taxation, behavioural finance, derivatives valuation, and entrepreneurial finance. By the end of the course, graduates are equipped to assess financial markets, analyse and solve complex financial problems, and apply theoretical and technical skills in practical settings. They also develop strong communication, teamwork, and professional skills necessary for success in the financial services industry. The degree prepares students for roles in investment banking, financial consulting, asset management, and corporate finance, or for further postgraduate studies in finance and related disciplines.
