COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Speech and Language Processing is structured around a combination of core modules, elective options, research training, and a final dissertation. Students complete six taught modules in total, including four core modules and two electives, with each module delivered through weekly two-hour sessions over a single term. Full-time students take two core modules and one elective module per term, while part-time students spread their studies across two years, completing one core module each term and one elective per year. All students also participate in research methodology tutorials, which support the development of academic and research skills. The core modules provide a strong foundation in key areas such as speech processing and spectral analysis, formal linguistic theory, laboratory phonetics and phonology, and natural language processing using datasets. Students then choose elective modules based on their interests, with options including multilingualism, psychology of language learning, speech technology for education, acoustic modelling, speech production and perception, and communication technologies. The program concludes with a 15,000-word dissertation, allowing students to conduct independent research on a specialised topic. This structure ensures a balanced development of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research capability in the field of speech and language processing.
