COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in Interactive Digital Media at Trinity College Dublin is a one-year, 90-ECTS postgraduate program leading to a Level 9 qualification on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. The course is structured across two 12-week teaching semesters, from September to December and January to April, followed by a research and project phase. Students submit a research proposal early in the academic year, which is approved before they begin their independent research work. Assessment takes place in May, after which students complete a final collaborative project. The program places strong emphasis on theoretical understanding of digital media rather than purely application-based training. Students engage with programming languages, development platforms, and methods for creating, capturing, and presenting multimedia content such as text, graphics, audio, video, and interactive systems. Core modules typically include programming for digital media, authoring for digital media, contextual media studies, audio/video and sensor technologies, and visual computing and design. The course accommodates students from both technical and non-technical backgrounds, offering foundational programming support for beginners and more advanced instruction for those with prior experience. In addition, students complete a 12,000-word research dissertation and a final collaborative project, combining academic research with practical digital media production skills.
